Mar 12. Beechworth Historic Park

It was a day for hiking, history and exploring Beechworth, past and present.

We started with a hike down the historic Beechworth gorge tail to Woolshed falls. This 5km trek is pretty steep and uneven but gives a good view of what went on here in the gold rush days. There were tons of gold extracted and in the process, miles of the river bank was destroyed by hydraulic mining. The environment was not a consideration in those days.

Damage from mining.

There was evidence of wild life along the trail. We looked for koalas but didn't see any.

Termite mound.

Wombat hole
After the hike we had another great picnic lunch in a park.

We did an historical tour of the old sections of Beechworth including the famous  museum and the town court house and jail.

There were lots of exhibits including this one of stuffed birds

The Court room.

Ned Kelly's armour. It proved to not be very effective.

Historic post office.

Billsons brewery and museum.

The large buggy and wagon collection included a Hearst.

Early brewing equipment.

The group had a party at the Bridge Road brewery. Its was a great way to cap off an excellent visit to Beechworth.
